ABOUT THE EAGLESHAM HISTORY SOCIETY

Eaglesham History Society was established in September 2012 following the success of the Eaglesham Heritage Trail. A group of interested people attended an open meeting at which Eaglesham History Society was born.

The aims of the Society are to provide knowledge of local and national history, collect and catalogue items of local history and to undertake research into local history. Membership has remained strong in our first four years, with around 90 active members from the village and further afield.

Monthly members’ meetings are normally held from September to April each year, at which specialist guest speakers give illustrated talks on a wide range of history-related subjects. Our talks have included such subjects as:

  • The Glasgow, Paisley and Johnstone Canal
  • The Vikings
  • Rosa Parks and Montgomery Bus Boycott
  • History of Scottish Art
  • Archaeology of Renfrewshire, and
  • Two Planned Communities: Eaglesham and East Kilbride

The Society has also run events in association with DigIt! 2015 – the year of Scottish Archaeology and community events such as history walks around Eaglesham and mini local history exhibitions at Eaglesham Fair and East Renfrewshire Door Open Days. We also work closely with East Renfrewshire Heritage Centre and Eaglesham Primary School.

We are currently working on the Eaglesham History Project, a project supported by the National Lottery through the National Heritage Fund. The main focus of the project is to record local oral histories from the 20th and 21st centuries.

We are proud to be supported by the Best Western Eglinton Arms Hotel where we meet regularly.
